HD Radio Coming To More Vehicles
By Joseph Palenchar -- TWICE, 4/2/2010
New York - Additional vehicles are getting factory-installed HD Radio,
iBiquity Digital said during the New York Auto Show.
Volvo added the S60 to its S series and is including HD Radio as standard
equipment. The 2010-model-year vehicle will be available later this year.
All other Volvo models already offer standard HD Radio.
Also at the show, Scion is announcing its 2011 iQ and tC vehicles, which
will offer HD Radio as part of optional audio-upgrade packages. They will
join Scion's xB and xD, which already offer HD Radio as a factory-installed
option.
In addition, the Ford Mustang and Super Duty have arrived in dealer
showrooms with optional factory-installed HD Radio, iBiquity said.
Ford also told TWICE that HD Radio will be part of a voice-activated
navigation system with 8-inch touchscreen available as an option in
2011-model-year Ford, Lincoln and Mercury models. The navigation option will
be available in most vehicles. HD Radio will also be part of a package
incorporating second-generation Sync systems and MyFord Touch systems, the
company told TWICE.
Previously, Ford offered HD Radio only as a dealer-installed option across
the Ford, Lincoln and Mercury lines.
For its part, BMW went to the show to launch the 2011 BMW 5-series sedan
with standard HD Radio. iBiquity previously said HD Radio would be an option
in the vehicle. All other current BMW models offer HD Radio as standard
equipment.
All told, about 80 vehicle lines will come with factory-installed HD Radio
as standard or optional equipment, iBiquity Digital told TWICE in February.
"Radio’s Revenue Falls Even as Audience Grows"
November 2008
"And automakers, which have other problems, are not embracing the
technology; so far, only Volvo is offering HD Radio as a standard
feature in its new cars (it is standard in all but one of its 2009
models). HD radio is pretty much going to be nonexistent, because they
can’t figure out how to get the auto guys to include that as an
option, and the auto guys that do include HD don’t let the consumers
know about it, Ms. Ryvicker of Wachovia Capital Markets said. It’s
been a horribly marketed product that’s not going to save the radio
industry."

"DEAD AIR: Radio’s Great Leap Forward stalling in the Valley"
December 2007
"Nearly two years after the Valley’s four Clear Channel stations went
HD, several high-end car manufacturers have promised to offer HD
radios as an option on new models. But while Ford announced in
September that it offers the radios as dealer-installed upgrades — as
have Mini, Volvo, Jaguar and BMW — local Ford and Lincoln dealers had
not heard of HD and said they don’t offer the option."

models by 2010, but this had not happened in the 2010 models that came
out in the end of 2009."

"When the complaints start rolling into the dealership service
departments, surely one suggestion from service advisers will be to
switch to Satellite Radio. Ironically, the end of terrestrial radio
may come at the hand of terrestrial radio itself."

"Cheap in the aftermarket (less so on new cars)"
August 2008
"Unfortunately, on new cars HD Radio is often a pricy option, costing
$350-plus for the radio upgrade, or as much as 10 times as much when
it's part of a package. For Mercedes, HD radio is part of a P1 premium
package that costs $3,000-plus. On BMW, HD Radio is available
separately, but it's $350 and must be installed at the factory."

"The radios are estimated to cost about $45 each to install, or each
of the three carmakers about $150 million to $200 million annually,
